UPDATE – Professional Practice Assignment

// April 9th, 2008 // Comments Off // ATRiuM

Hi everyone,

I’ve spoken with Ryan who called Emma to verify about the assignment and the latest details are as follows:

Submission Details

Tomorrow you need to hand in your assignment papers to Ryan in Emma’s office (CA315), so he can write down who handed in their assignment. (Not at the reception desk, but at Emma, Jason and Chris’s office).

Please note: If you can’t find Ryan, he said he will be in room CA303 (on the other side of the 3rd floor, behind Emma’s office)

Company Structures

I discussed with Ryan every point of the assignment to ensure we have all the information we need for it, and the only additional element you need is to choose a company and analyse it (its structure), based on what I explained to you in my previous email, which I’ve included below for your reference.

See which category the company you’ve chosen fits in (Partnership? Sole Trade? Limited Company?, etc). Afterwards provide information about the company and whom it consists of, explaining the company’s structure (boss, employees, etc).

By combining all that material together you will have fulfilled the requirements of the task and can relax once all is complete and printed out.

Be sure to reference your sources of information so Emma can check and verify everything.

If you need any further help or have any questions, please feel free to drop me an email.

Final Note: I’ve been asked by the Course Rep Co-ordinator to ask as many students and staff as possible to vote for who they think should be nominated for Course Rep of the Year. The winner will be awarded an award (like you see on BAFTA awards, etc).

If you want, please vote for me by sending an email to rthomas5@glam.ac.uk and write down my name, course and year, and write a few sentences on why you think I should be nominated.

Name: Luke Dench

Course: BA [Hons] Design For Media

Year: Final Year

Thank you very much!

Professional Practice Folder Assignment

// April 9th, 2008 // Comments Off // ATRiuM

Hi everyone,

According to Emma Marshman, interviews are now to start after the second week of coming back, although everyone will be given at least 4 days notice before that happens.

The Professional Practice folder is expected to be handed in on the Thursday 10th of April, so aim to get it done by Wednesday if you can.

What should be in the Professional Practice Folder:

  • Evidence of presentations – Evaluation (group/individual)
  • Research into copyright, and produce a leaflet on it, explaining how copyright works.
  • Research into company structures (sole trades, partnership, etc).
  • Provide evidence of research for your Curriculum Vitae (CV) & Covering Letters.

1. Evidence of presentations

Basically what I have understood from what she explained during the lecture was that we need to show evidence of the research we did for making the presentations, so if you can, print out your presentation slides (animation frames if it was a video piece or flash) as well as any research you found online on how to make a presentation, this way it will show that you understood the requirements of the assignment and produced the material correctly.

Show everything that you done for the presentation for extra points.

Some students presented presentations that either spoke for themselves through the use of imagery and type, while others spoke during their presentations.

For this reason, it would be a good idea to print out your speech, but if you didn’t prepare one, then just make sure you show on your printed presentation each topic you introduced (each part you said on the presentation), unless the presentation shows that, in which case you’ve done it already!

Go through your presentations one more time to refresh your memory and then start getting it all ready.

2. Copyright

As for copyright, as stated in the whiteboard and explained by Emma during the lecture, you need to write about copyright.

I would suggest you start off by writing what copyright is, then carrying on to explain how copyright works, how does it affect you as a designer, or where you use it and for what kind of work you produce it applies to.

How to present the finished piece: Produce a leaflet, in other words a pamphlet (horizontal A4 document folded in three parts, with information on each side of the folded paper. Click here for example picture (shows only one side, but remember it should have text on both sides). Click here for more picture examples.

To get research material for copyright, these are the websites that Emma showed us, but if you search on Google, I am sure you will find a lot more. Click here for a Google Search on UK Copyright Law.

Please note: Copyright law is different from one country to the other, so make sure that any research you find and base your writing on is by a UK website or a UK company which illustrates UK Copyright Law. For this purpose focus on the following three websites as main research sources.

UK Intellectual Property Office - http://www.patent.gov.uk/

ACID ( Anti Copying In Design) - http://www.acid.uk.com/

Briffa (Specialist Intellectual Property Law Firm) - http://www.briffa.com/

Emma showed us a video by Larry Lessig on TED (http://www.ted.com), on copyright and intellectual property rights, etc. Interesting to watch.

The video is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Q25-S7jzgs

3. Company Structures

To the best of my understanding and knowledge and with the use of my notes from the lecture, Emma’s requirement is to explain the company structures in the UK, such as sole trades, partnership, limited trademark companies and so forth.

My advice to you is to search on Google for UK company structures and write down in a document a little about what each company structure is about, and what it makes it different from one another. Think of small summaries; I don’t think you would need anything more than 500 words and that might even be a big figure. Print off the two or three A4 pages that this will produce and you’re done!

4. Evidence of Research for CV and Covering Letter

You’ve nearly finished the entire assignment now, just this final part to complete.

I’m going to include my CV and Covering Letter along with the research, so I would suggest you do the same as you’ve all produced very good work from what I’ve seen in class.

I’m sure a lot of you have written your CV and Covering Letter from past experience or because you are currently working and know how to write both because you had to do this in the past.

However, in order to show your understanding and capability to produce a curriculum vitae (resume) and a covering letter, you need to show research for it, so search on Google for some CV and Covering Letter advice websites (such as www.careerswales.co.uk or www.jobswales.co.uk, etc – you get the picture – they have all that you will need to start you off for the research).

Remember, Emma will be happy with anything you show to her, so print off anything you find you think is useful, it will count for your marks!

For the final stage of the assignment, you will need a submission form to print out to hand in for the assignment. A good idea would be to put it all inside an envelope so it doesn’t get lost, but if you don’t have one, just staple everything together.

Be sure to go to the main reception desk in the Atrium on Thursday 10th April before 4:00pm the latest. As Emma is ill and will be absent through the week, it’s a standard procedure to submit it to the reception desk.

Final notes that I have to offer is that even if you haven’t done much, just hand it in anyway. You will still get a mark for what you submit, but if you don’t hand in anything, you will fail the assignment.

The Assignment details to submit it are as follows:

Module Name: Professional Practice

Module Code: DE3H12

Assignment Title: Professional Practice Folder

I am also providing you with a Coversheet I’ve prepared for submitting the assignment in Word document and PDF document format so you can print it out and fill out your name and enrolment number. To download the files click the following:

Assignment Coversheet (Word Document)

Assignment Coversheet (PDF Document)

I know I wrote a lot, and I hope it doesn’t seem too much, but I just wanted to make everything clear and explain it all. In truth, this assignment is very easy and shouldn’t take you more than a couple of hours at most!

I hope this information answers all your questions and helps you finish the assignment. If you’re still unsure drop me another email or ask Emma, but I think you should be okay with what I said above.

Take care,

Luke
